OK, OK, so I borrowed from former Colts coach Jim Mora's famous rant. [Well worth 50 seconds of your life, you can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qwq7BYOnDrM.]
Nobody wants to talk about layoffs. They can be devastating. But they're happening as a result of the largest financial fraud in history.
The greedy psychopaths responsible would love for all of those persons who've been laid off to simply accept that they are exactly what the greedy psychopaths consider them to be, worthless.
In fact, if you listened to the Enron scoundrels, infamous for what now seems like a petite financial fraud, laughing at the prospects of old ladies freezing to death as a result of their crimes, it's not a stretch to say that the greedy psychopaths would prefer that all those laid off as a result of their fraud simply kill themselves.
Don't do it. Don't even question yourself or your judgment.
Raging Bullwinkle is a prison psychologist. I spend 40 hours a week with serious criminals, including psychopaths. They blame their victims. They explain how their victims' inadequacies caused them to become victims. It makes the bad guys happy just to say it, happier when they get an indication that the victim believes it (as may occur if the victim speaks at their sentencing hearing).
So if you begin to question yourself--Why did I...? or Why didn't I...?--stop it.
The best definition of depression (psychological, not economic) I've ever heard comes from a retired Marine who said depression is just anger without enthusiasm. There's support for this assertion from neuroscientists.
So if you feel sad or even depressed, send an e-mail to your U.S. Representative. If you've no suggestions (mind your manners), just tell your story. Tell them how you did all the right things, worked honorably and hard, and lost your job as a result of the actions of greedy psychopaths who were not only unregulated, but operated above the law.
And if it helps to inspire you, imagine your U.S. Representative or his or her representative, reading your e-mail while muttering, "Layoffs? Don't talk about layoffs!"

Well said. I think the fraud is only beginning to be exposed. Fraud is the second biggest ill in our society, right behind ignorance. Sadly, while the corporate fraud went unchecked, who now is going to have the guts to stand up to the upcoming government fraud?
ReplyDeleteGood point Dave. To think that now that the fraud has been recognized, and called-out to an extent, it will now stop. Ahhh, to dream.
ReplyDeleteAnother question is, what will be the "new" fraud? Hopefully something creative.
Ralph,
ReplyDeleteIndeed. One problem, which the late B.F. Skinner identified as endemic, is that we keep looking for "people we can trust" to put into positions that allow them to violate that trust at will.
The Founding Fathers set up a tripartite gub'mint so power wouldn't be too concentrated, and each branch could serve as a watchdog of the other two branches. That's broken down badly.
How badly? This morning Imus commented on how out of touch Sen. Chuck Shumer (D-NY) is. Shumer actually said the American people don't care about pork in the stimulus bill. That's something both liberals and conservatives are concerned about!
Tom Friedman told Imus this morning "This is not a test." (He meant "not a drill.") We're in an unprecedented crisis and we need to get it right!
Baby Bullwinkle will be paying for Shumer's pork long after Shumer has "left the building."

Raging Bullwinkle -
ReplyDeleteYour point about Baby Bullwinkle brings to mind a question: What happened to the Democratic dogma of not leaving this debt to our children?
Suddenly, the Democrats think we need the largest bill in history - loaded with pork - to add to our enormous debt to pass on to our children. And, we need to pass the bill as quickly as possible (so no one can actually read the entire bill and figure out the pork). I say BS. Get it correct now. Stimulus sounds good, but Schumer's pork comment shows that the Democratic dogma is dead.
I don't get all the problems with "pork". Everyone loves pork! Bacon is part of a good breakfast, Ham is a holiday favorite, and "Babe" won an Oscar (Meyer) for Best Picture!
ReplyDeleteI think pork is being misrepresented by our gov't.
